I have v1 of the shield. I get data fine but am missing a lot of text messages. Tried updating through both settings-system updates as well as ## 72786# code method .
Neither worked...any suggestions?

Just to clarify, you are missing a lot of text messages, but not all of them?
What messaging app do you use?
Which messages are lost? Same senders and / or source carrier?
Or are this long messages (longer than 160 chars)?

The only experience I've had with missing "some" text messages is when I was using the Verizon Messages texting app on one device, and on a second device I changed from the Verizon app to another text messaging app. Messages that were kept in sync before were no longer being kept in sync. By any chance are you using more than one device to text messaging?

Yeah I just downloaded sheild x beta but it sags that I am not protected on my Note 7. I still have v1 running with the green protected icon, but the red one is up on sheild x. I pressed launch sheild and even tried to manually disable fwurgent etc. (Gave me an internal message error) Don't wanna clutter the forum or thread so tomorrow I will try to read up a bit and figure out where I went wrong I suppose.

For a Note 7 then you have to use the v3 method which requires removing all accounts and running the script. OR the factory reset with another device using NFC.
