"Cast to Nearby Device" Notification keeps popping up.

Over the last couple months, I've been getting this Chromecast notification through Waze, Music, Youtube. Pretty much any media app that supports this kind of share content. Except that I don't have chromecast anywhere in my home, and it has been happening way too frequently. Just today I've received the notification three times, twice at home, and once on the road. The annoying part is no matter how many times you smash the back button or home button, it keeps popping up until you can kill whatever app might of been the cause. It usually happens when you turn the volume up or down, then all of the sudden you get the pop up. I've tried looking at some of the google hangout forums, but none of their 'staff' seem to have an idea on what's causing it, some people have said run into settings, and knock out device visibility, and near by scanning. Others had said go into the google settings and turn off 'set up nearby devices' and 'google cast' Which I've done last night, but it still persisted. I found another post saying turn off notifications from Chrome, (No idea if it has helped or not)
So I'm hoping other people here have had the same issues, or found a way to work around this issue, aside from banging on the neighbors door and flushing their chromcast down the toilet. Oh and to verify, it has happened before I had the shield version 1 installed, it just seems like the pop up has increased on it's own accord. Also the attached screenshot isn't mine, it's one I pulled off a forum, but says the same notice.

Well, I don't believe neighbors having a chromecast is the culprit.
There are 3 wifi networks in my home. On one network, there are 2 Chromecast devices on 2 TV's, and 1 Smart TV. The only time I ever get that message that you are seeing is when my phone is on a network that the Chromecast devices are *not* on, and I have told the phone to cast to something (not paying attention to the fact I'm on the wrong network).
From what you're saying, it would seem that your phone has been "told" to cast, is seeing nothing, and therefore searching for something to cast
to.
See you already said it...
"it keeps popping up until you can kill whatever app might have been the cause..."
So, it's an app on your phone that is lonely... it's trying to cast (for whatever reason) and your phone doesn't see anything to cast to...
Probably the easiest thing you can do is to uninstall one app at a time until you find the culprit, then focus your efforts there. I doubt it's YouTube.
Until someone can come up with a more specific answer, this might be a good place to start without a lot of effort...

The funny (Well not really funny when it happens lol) Is it happens when I use Vidster, Youtube, and Waze, but only happens once I adjust the volume. Been looking through some of the permissions manager to see if I could find anything to disable it, but haven't come across anything yet. Is it possible that my phone is somehow trying to connect with the second N7 in the house? I mean they're both connected to the same wifi. o.O I'll be super happy once this issue goes away.

I doubt it... it's an app, and again I don't think it's YouTube, as other people would have reported it. See if you can uninstall Vidster or Waze (just one) for a day or two and see if the problem goes away; if not, try the other. I really think this will not go away on its own, unless there is an update to the offending app... just try and see what happens.

It's odd, I uninstalled vidster and waze, kept YouTube to see. Nothing happened until that small icon of a screen and bars showed up in the corner of the player. Uninstalled YouTube and installed waze, didn't get anything even when playing with the volume button. Also tried on and off Wi-Fi. While Wi-Fi was off, vidster and YouTube tried to connect to something. It's probably something in an app I can't mess with.
On an interesting note, it doesn't happen when I ha e headphones plugged in. Lol.

Wow... that IS odd. the small icon of a screen w/ bars is definitely the Chromecast icon...
Just for fun... let's try a couple of things... if it works, then I'll explain why...
1.) If you have Google Home, uninstall it (it's not preloaded, so should uninstall completely, not just become disabled). Turn off your phone. Restart your phone. See if problem goes away.
If that doesn't work... try
2.) Reinstall Google Home (even if you have no Chromecast devices). Then see if your problem continues...
OR...
3.) If you never did have Google Home installed to begin with, install it. (I have it because sometimes my Youtube app "loses" its connection to what I'm viewing, and I have to open Google Home to disconnect the Chromecast device, or even re-boot it.)
All this because Google Home is the only other thing I can think of that can tell your phone to try to cast to something...
Let me know...

Nope, never had this Google home app. Took me a minute to figure out what it was lol. Anyway I went ahead and downloaded it, had it scan for devices, didn't find any, then opened YouTube, played a random video and started playing with rhe volume button. Nothing happened, went ahead and sat the phone down, removed the headphones and bam popped up again. Starting to think it's just a rogue Chromecast program, maybe finding apks of the apps before it started the whole integration thing. The bright side is, i can actually play witg the volume longer before it happens lol.
He'll, maybe it's karma after all the times I IR- blasted display tv's at Wal-Mart, or mirror screened videos of annoying sponge Bob moments. Lol. [IMG]

...it IS because of Sponge Bob... One way or another...
Evil, Evil little sponge...
What about games? Any games that could possibly be trying to cast (that use the volume butttons)?
Other than FDR, I'm stumped...

You know I'm not going to sleep at night until we figure this out... and there IS one way to figure it out for sure... at least I think so.
Get a Chromecast device. (borrow a friend's if you don't want to buy one for yourself, but they are pretty cheap nowadays...)
Connect it to something in your home.
Wait for it to happen again.
But... this time, it won't ask for a pin because it will see any other Chromecast device on the same wifi network.
Let it Cast to the Chromecast device it finds.
See what is broadcasting, and that should unequivocally point you to whatever is doing this.

XD sorry, been a long day. But I never had any issues with volume on my games. Or even emulators, though i don't believe they support chrome cast. But you might be right with getting one and seeing what happens. [emoji14] worst case, i find the most annoying video on my phone, let it broadcast and wait for something to happen.

But since you've now installed Google Home, once it does start casting, you can go to Google Home, Devices, and SEE what app is casting to the Chromecast device... Like when I'm casting Youtube, Google Home SHOWS YouTube as the one casting...
...we must find the offending app... or, to use a more southern colloquialism... "We gotta track that down like a rabid dog in the springtime..."

Sorry for the delay but I wanted to wait around and see what happened. So like you said, I picked up one of the Chromecast thingamajig and set everything up. Went to playing around with apps to see what exactly was trying to broadcast. Turns out it was YouTube. (Waze only tried once. ) and it seemed like every time YouTube app had the stupid Chromecast icon in the corner of the video, it was actively trying to connect with anything. Even when the app was running in the background, probably refreshing or still being used. So until the issue has actually been fixed, I either need to adjust volume before watching a video, or just stay connected to Chromecast lol. Still find it odd how randomly it began to pop up.

Now, I use Chromecast + Youtube frequently and have never had this happen. I have never had Youtube try to cast unless I hit the icon, and GUESS WHAT I just noticed... the Chromecast icon is RIGHT NEXT TO the volume up button when you're looking at something on your phone in landscape mode *IF* you turn your phone 90 degrees clockwise to watch a vid.
DO YOU TURN YOUR PHONE CLOCKWISE OR COUNTER-CLOCKWISE TO WATCH A VID? I just gotta know!!!

XD bahahaha I never noticed that too. Occasionally I'll watch a video with my phone vertical. But as you said I turn it clockwise so the volume rocker is to the right, and the home and back buttons are to the left.

I think we may have just solved our mystery...

I think you're accidentally touching that *poorly located* Chromecast icon! Just for giggles, start turning your phone counter clockwise to watch vids... I bet the problem will not recur...
