ADB, Android Debug Bridge, is a command-line utility included with Google\u2019s Android SDK. ADB can control your device over USB from a computer, copy files back and forth, install and uninstall apps, run shell commands, and more.<\/span><\/p>\n

Step One: Set Up the Android SDK<\/span><\/h2>\n

Head to the\u00a0Android SDK download page<\/a>\u00a0and scroll down to \u201cSDK Tools Only\u201d, which is a set of tools that includes ADB. Download the ZIP file for your platform and unzip it wherever you want to store the ADB files\u2013they\u2019re portable, so you can put them anywhere you want.<\/span><\/p>\n

Start the SDK Manager EXE and deselect everything except \u201cAndroid SDK Platform-tools\u201d. If you are using a Nexus phone, you may also want to select \u201cGoogle USB Driver\u201d to download Google\u2019s drivers. Click the Install button. This downloads and installs the platform-tools package, which contains ADB and other utilities. When it\u2019s finished, you can close the SDK manager.<\/span><\/p>\n

Step Two: Enable\u00a0USB Debugging on Your Phone<\/span><\/h2>\n

\"\"<\/a>To use ADB with your Android device, you must enable a feature called USB debugging<\/em>. Open Settings icon, and select \u201cAbout Phone<\/strong>\u201d. Scroll all the way down and tap the \u201cBuild Number<\/strong>\u201d item seven times. You should get a message saying you are now a developer.<\/span><\/p>\n

Head back to the main Settings page, and you should see a new option near the bottom called \u201cDeveloper Options<\/strong>\u201d. Open that, and enable \u201cUSB Debugging<\/strong>\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n

Later on, when you connect your phone to your computer, you\u2019ll see a popup entitled \u201cAllow USB Debugging?<\/strong>\u201d on your phone. Check the \u201cAlways allow from this computer<\/em>\u201d box and tap OK<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n

Step Three: Test ADB and Install Your Phone\u2019s\u00a0Drivers\u00a0(if Needed)<\/span><\/h2>\n

Open the folder that you installed the SDK tools in and open the platform-tools folder. This is where the ADB program is stored. Hold Shift and right-click inside the folder. Choose \u201cOpen Command Window Here\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n

To test whether ADB is working properly, connect your Android device to your computer using a USB cable and run the following command:<\/span><\/p>\n

You should see a device in the list. If your device is connected but nothing appears in the list, you\u2019ll need to install the appropriate drivers.<\/span><\/p>\n

Your phone\u2019s manufacturer may provide a downloadable driver package for your device. So head to their website and find the drivers for your device\u2013Motorola\u2019s are\u00a0here<\/a>, Samsung\u2019s are\u00a0here<\/a>, and HTC\u2019s come as part of a suite called\u00a0HTC Sync Manager<\/a>. You can also search\u00a0XDA Developers<\/a>\u00a0for driver downloads without the extra software.<\/span><\/p>\n

You can also try installing the Google USB Driver from the Extras folder in the SDK Manager window, as we mentioned in the first step. This\u00a0will work with some phones including Nexus devices.<\/span><\/p>\n

If you use Google\u2019s USB driver, you\u00a0may have to force Windows to use the installed drivers for your device. Open the Device Manager (click Start, type Device Manager, and press Enter), locate your device, right-click it and select Properties. You may see a yellow exclamation mark next to the device if its driver isn\u2019t installed properly.<\/span><\/p>\n

Once you\u2019ve installed your device\u2019s drivers,\u00a0plug in your phone and try the adb devices command again:<\/span><\/p>\n

If all went well, you should see your device in the list, and you are ready to start using ADB!<\/span><\/p>\n

Step Four (Optional): Add ADB to Your System PATH<\/span><\/h2>\n

As it stands, you have to navigate to ADB\u2019s folder and open a Command Prompt there whenever you want to use it. However, if you add it to your Windows System PATH, that won\u2019t be necessary\u2013you can just type\u00a0adb<\/code>\u00a0from the Command Prompt to run commands whenever you want, no matter what folder you\u2019re in.<\/span><\/p>\n
